GCAN athletics clubs at Core Cambridge

This weekend, we delivered an introduction to Strength & Conditioning to athletes and coaches from the Greater Cambridge Network of athletics clubs.

The athletes/coaches were selected from Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club, Saffron Striders, Ely Runners, Cambridge Triathlon Club, and East Cambridgeshire Athletics Club.

The purpose of the talk was to give the attendees a (very!) quick introduction to Strength & Conditioning and the topics that it encompasses. To do this, we talked through common injuries, the causes of injury, the importance of posture, core stability, strength training, the development of speed/ power training and how it all comes together into a program.

Obviously, there was only so much we could cover in a few hours, but it certainly fulfilled its mission to make people think differently about the role that strength training can (and should) play in athletic preparation.

“The feedback from this event was fantastic,” said June Swift, the GCAN co-ordinator, “It’s great to be able to give our athletes and coaches access to this kind of information and expertese that they might not ordinarily get to see. We’re really looking forward to organising a more in-depth series of talks here throughout the off-season.”
